DECK THE HALLS WITH THESE USEFUL TIPS

St. Petersburg, Fla. – With the holiday season only months away, Nick Schriver, owner and franchisor of Decorating Elves is helping consumers by providing tips to people decorating their own houses and a unique service to those who want to Avoid The Holiday Hassle!™ all together and have their homes decorated by professionals.

Decorating Elves is an upscale holiday lighting and decor company and Schriver is offering the below tips to homeowners who are preparing to deck the halls this holiday season:

  • Safety is the most important tip not only during installation, but also in the layout and design. Make sure all ladders are placed on a firm level ground to avoid swaying and tipping. Do not lean or stretch to reach something, and never work near power lines. Make sure that cords are not placed in high-traveled areas to avoid injuries to people walking in the area.
  • Electricity and water do not mix. Don’t forget that you cannot run your sprinklers at the same time you are running your lights.
  • Plan for power. "Most people do not have proper electricity," Schriver said, who recently did a job for a builder who ran an additional 180 amps of electricity to power the lights.
  • Electrical load is another important area. It is recommended that all outdoor outlets are gfci compliant (most newer homes are installed this way) so the circuit grounds itself and turns off. It is also recommended that homeowners follow all manufacturers’ suggestions on how many lights to run in a row in addition to keeping all circuits at a 75 percent capacity.
  • If you are planning new construction, now is the time to talk to your builder about incorporating separate circuits and outdoor outlets for future lighting. Outlets in the eaves and in the landscaping are ideal.
  • Don’t forget to let your lawn care service know that there are cords throughout your yard.
  • When it comes to design, find a focal point and build the design and display around it. Good focal points are usually the front door or main entry and can sometimes be an architectural feature, a landscaped island, or a large tree. Once the focal point has been established, build the design and display around it using good geometry and spacing.
  • It is also a good idea to stay consistent with a design. If you use red and green lights, then you want to use them throughout. If you plan on using multi-color lights, use them consistently throughout the entire design.

“Decorating a home for the holidays can be rewarding if done properly and planned out ahead of time,” said Nick Schriver, owner and franchisor of Decorating Elves. “Many clients however, tell me they want to Avoid The Holiday Hassle!™ and have their homes decorated by professionals so that they can keep their marriages in tact and spend more time shopping and visiting with family and friends.”

The Company which Schriver founded in the winter of 2002 provides outdoor holiday lighting solutions to time-starved homeowners during the busiest time of the year. In addition to decorating houses, Decorating Elves provides outdoor lighting for special events; wedding receptions; parties and graduations; store and business openings; corporate events; restaurants, bars and clubs.

Decorating Elves is based in St. Petersburg, Fla., and currently services the Tampa Bay area.
